UPF vs SPF - please explain!

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between UPF and SPF? Let us tell you more.

What is UPF?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and indicates how much UV radiation the fabric of your clothing will allow to reach your skin. For example, our Meri rompers and long-sleeved shirts have received an excellent sun safety rating of UPF50+ by ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency). This means that our garments block 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, providing superior protection for your little ones during outdoor adventures.

What is SPF?
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is used to measure a sunscreen's ability to block UV rays and protect you from sunburn. Unlike UPF, which applies to fabrics, SPF is specifically designed to measure the effectiveness of topical sunscreens applied to the skin.

Key Differences Between UPF and SPF:

Feature UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
Application Measures protection provided by fabrics Measures protection provided by sunscreen
Coverage Protects all covered areas Works only where sunscreen is applied
Longevity Effective as long as the clothing is worn Requires reapplication due to sweat, water, and time

When it comes to sun safety, combining UPF-rated clothing with SPF sunscreen creates the ultimate shield against harmful UV rays. Meri the Label’s sun-safe clothing ensures your child’s comfort and protection, so they can explore the great outdoors worry-free.
